Gentleman's Victorian Inverness Coat

Will the real Sherlock please stand up? You need our pattern for this beautiful Inverness coat based on an original pattern from the 19th century. Fits chests 34" through 54" with instructions for larger sizes. The Inverness Coat is really more of a cape than a coat. Starting as a single-breasted variation of the Ulster, in the 1870s the cape stopped going all the way around the back and was instead sewn into the armholes in the rear. In the 1880s, sleeves were deemed unnecessary and the armhole was cut away to accommodate movement. Thus the flowing outer garment made famous by Sherlock Holmes was born! All sizes are included in one pattern. Detailed instructions, period tailoring directions, embellishment suggestions, and historical notes are also included. Plus you can call our toll-free number with any questions.

Hieronymus Posh, The Kingpins - Liverpool Biennial 2006

Australian four-woman collective The Kingpins first hit the big time when they won a drag king contest in a Sydney nightclub with a beer-spitting, stage-diving impersonation of Guns & Roses. Connoisseurs of pop style and graphic design, The Kingpins throw everything from electro pop to death metal to riot grrrl into the visual mix to create live performances and videos that both pay tribute to, and comment incisively on, pop culture, mass media and corporate hype. Their filmic journey through Liverpudlian culture and history swirls between William Hesketh Lever’s famous creation, Sunlight Soap, and the fantasy-world of Liverpool’s hedonistic club scene. The Kingpins ask: what’s lurking under the glittering surface? How far apart are control and chaos?

Part of my set "Things you don't want to see on (or near) your truck", I wouldn't want to have to pull this sadly neglected set of doubles, seen near Golden Gate Fields in Albany, CA. As far as I can tell, (I didn't take that close a look...) neither trailer in this set has had a BIT inspection in the 90 days prior to this photo, the grease near the kingpin is dried out, and the wheel bearings may be dry, too. Taken by a Nikon D40x with a Sigma 70-300 DG non-APO macro lens. (at 70)

Cleaing up the front wheel.

I'm doing a GS500 to DR650 wheel conversion so that I can put 17" radial street tires on my DR650. This is the donor front wheel.

I've used paint remover to get most of the old white paint off, but it's hard to get it off the textured spokes and center. I'll get it off the best I can then prime it and paint it black. The outer edge will remain bare, but clear coated, aluminum.

ASHLEY FORCE HOOD’S RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE MUSTANG
TO BE FEATURED AT 48TH ANNUAL WORLD OF WHEELS

YORBA LINDA, CA (March 1, 2010) --- Chicagoland's largest custom car show will feature Ashley Force Hood's Ronald McDonald House Charity themed NHRA Mustang Funny Car. O'Reilly's Auto Parts and South Oak Dodge will present the 48th Annual World of Wheels, March 5-7 2010, at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont, Illinois. Force Hood’s Mustang will be on display as part of the Chicago BrushMaster Kustom Kulture Art Auction with all proceeds going to Ronald McDonald House Charities of Chicagoland and Northwest Indiana. Fans will be able to get their photo taken beside the Mustang throughout the weekend and get an up close look at one of the fastest race cars in motor sports.

Ashley Force Hood campaigned the Ronald McDonald House Charities Mustang at two events (Seattle and Sonoma) during the 2009 Full Throttle Drag Racing Series. The attention the car generated for the Ronald McDonald House Charities is something Force Hood is proud to continue into 2010.

“I was thrilled to be able to help raise awareness and donations for the Ronald McDonald House Charities in Seattle and Sonoma. BrandSource, one of our major sponsors, is very involved with this organization and their president Bob Lawrence, started talking with us about getting involved in early 2009. We got really excited about all the opportunities to help so this program came together very quickly,” said Force Hood.

“The biggest thing for me was being able to race this amazing looking Ford Mustang. I knew it would draw a lot of attention and I wanted to turn that excitement into donations for Ronald McDonald House Charities. I have so many fans that are children I really want reach out to them and their families to encourage them to give to or volunteer with this great organization.”

In just two previous World of Wheels Custom Car shows, the Chicago BrushMasters have raised over $110,000.00 for the charity. The Kustom Kulture Auction will feature the work of over 100 automotive artists from across the nation. Items auctioned off will include gold leaf lettered, pin-striped and air brushed pieces of Kustom Kulture Art and Automotive Memorabilia.

Auctions will be conducted Friday at 7pm, Saturday at 4 pm and 7pm with a final auction held on Sunday at 4pm. Ronald McDonald himself will be appearing near the Ashley Force Hood Mustang display both Saturday and Sunday 4 pm to 5 pm.

Fans are encouraged to come out and help support Ronald McDonald House Charities in building the world’s largest Ronald McDonald House at 211 E. Grand Ave. in Chicago. At 14 stories, and 86 rooms, it will help keep families together during their child’s time of medical crisis.

The Donald E. Stephens Conventions Center is located at 5555 N. River Road in Rosemont, IL. Show Hours: Friday 3-10:30pm - Saturday 10am to 10:30pm and Sunday 10am to 7pm. bike 180 - ride day 82

i'm tired

after our burglary on friday, yesterday my daughter ella was admitted to hospital after we discovered that she is diabetic.
she was fantastically brave, despite the realisation that her life had just changed forever. i was scared, upset and proud, all at the same time.

i spent another 4 hours with her today and as i returned home saw one of our company cars outside the house... gosia (who as a reminder, i marry the week after next) had collapsed at work!

there is so much going on at the moment i don't know where to turn.
riding bikes is the thing that remains constant and is my escape - the thing i turn to to either get away from or get the chance to think more about stuff.

the photo shows my new racing wheels and tyres. they were heavily discounted by my friendly, local bike shop but still cost more than my first car (and that was a lovely capri 2.0S!). they carried me tonight to my second best ever 10 mile time trial time of 23 minutes and 56 seconds.

i'm going for a lie down.

"BETEL NUT ??" - Taiwanese Chewing Gum (by Nokia 6230i)

The Americans got "chewing tobacco", we Taiwanese got the "betel nut", also called the "Taiwanese chewing gum".
It's the seed of the betel palm, chewed with betel leaves, lime, and flavorings as a mild stimulant.
Betel nut addicts chew it, then spit it. The saliva they spit is RED. Many foreigners thought they were spitting BLOOD... lol
Don't ask me what it tastes like. I never tried it and I never will.
However, I'm very interested in the bright gaudy apple-green signboards :)

P.S. Any comment concerning the "Betelnut Girls" will be deleted without notice.

Goofs for Ben-Hur

Goofs for Ben-Hur

Goofs for Ben-Hur (1959)

Anachronisms: In the chariot scene, one of the trumpeters is wearing a watch. (One observer claims this is simply an unfortunately positioned shadow.)

Continuity: Ben-Hur places his crown of laurels on a table by the entrance when he visits the fallen Messala, but when he leaves, the crown is gone.

Anachronisms: The calf in the stable is a Holstein, a breed that did not exist at the time, and was unknown in the area until 1922.

Continuity: Nine chariots start the chariot race. After the first crash, there appear still to be nine chariots in the race. After the third crash, six are shown, but as Ben Hur passes to catch up, clearly there is a total of seven in the race. After five have crashed, five are left. Messala is the sixth chariot to crash, but Ben Hur and three others finish the race. Thus, nine chariots start the race, six crash, and four finish.

Continuity: During the chariot race, when we see the third fish lowered, the following shot shows briefly the fishes and the third is still up.

Revealing mistakes: Tyre tracks from the camera truck are visible in the sand of the circus during the chariot race.

Continuity: Messala damages Ben-Hur's chariot with his saw-toothed wheel-hubs, but when Ben-Hur drives up to Pontius Pilate to receive his prize, his chariot is undamaged.

Continuity: During the chariot race, shadow lengths/directions clearly show that passage of time (filming) inconsistent with length of "actual" race.

Continuity: Ben-Hur presents ring to be returned to Rome. Pontius Pilate moves so that he is always facing the camera as the angle reverses.

Anachronisms: As they are preparing for the chariot race, a raised platform is shown which is made of galvanized steel.

Continuity: An establishing shot of Jerusalem in the opening sequence shows a hooded Ben-Hur, long before he is born. The scene appears again later in the film as Judah Ben-Hur returns to Jerusalem from Rome.

Revealing mistakes: When Esther and Tirzah and Miriam seek shelter, the storm is violent enough to cause earth to fall in front of the cave, and the sound of the wind is deafening. Yet trees visible in the background (from the mouth of the cave) do not so much as sway in the breeze.

Anachronisms: During the scene in which Judah and Messala are talking in the courtyard of Judah's home, road noise from motorcycles can be heard in the background.

Crew or equipment visible: The shadow of the camera can be seen on Christ's back as Ben Hur is leaving Nazareth to go to the galleys (widescreen version).

Continuity: When Ben-Hur's and Messala's chariots lock wheels, Messala's wheel shatters. In the shot of the overturning chariot, the wheel is intact.

Audio/visual unsynchronized: When the audience first sees Ben-Hur and Messalla together and they both throw a spear at the wall, the sound of Ben-Hur's voice does not match up with his lips.

Revealing mistakes: Due to the relative widths of the horses pulling the chariots and the chariots themselves, there is actually no way that the cutting hubs on Messala's wheels could actually make contact with the wheels of any other chariots.

Anachronisms: Sheik Ilderim pins a Star of David onto Ben Hur's belt before the race, obviously to goad the Romans. The Star of David didn't become a symbol of Judaism until the Middle Ages, in Eastern Europe.

Anachronisms: Romans did not take slaves for their galleys. Galley slaves did not exist until the 16th century.

Revealing mistakes: Just before the Roman galley is rammed, the condemned men behind Ben-Hur are clearly dummies.

Anachronisms: Modern books with covers can be seen, at a time when only scrolls were used.

Factual errors: Most of the Roman soldiers seen are not displaying the Roman Army's "Winged Lightning" symbol on their shields.

Errors made by characters (possibly deliberate errors by the filmmakers): A character refers to the Roman Emperor as "The Divine Tiberius." The Emperor was never deified.

Anachronisms: The mezuzah shown at the entrance to Ben-Hur's home is mounted diagonally. That practice was not adopted until the middle ages, by Ashkenazi Jews, as a compromise between the rules offered by 2 medieval Rabbis.

Continuity: When Messala breaks a tile on Ben Hur's terrace, we can see a broken tile at his feet whereas on the shot before there was no tile.

Revealing mistakes: During the scene in which Judah and the Consul are rescued from the water, the waves breaking in the background reveal the end of the studio.

Revealing mistakes: A close-up of the saw-toothed wheel hubs, just before the race shows the modern welding.

Continuity: When Jesus is carrying the cross it changes from only the center beam to center beam and cross piece together, then back to center beam only.

Factual errors: At the beginning of the movie when Messallah is given the commission in Judea, the man whom he replaces mentions that there is a Man (Jesus) go

A new design by Phil Walker, the chain-driven overhead camshaft 7R had the history of the pre-war AJS ‘cammy’ singles behind it. Initially, the 7R was not as powerful as its competitors, producing 32 bhp (24 kW) at 7500 rpm. The duplex frame and Teledraulic front forks remained relatively unchanged during production, while the engine had a number of changes. The included valve angle was progressively narrowed, and the crankshaft strengthened. In 1956 the engine dimensions changed from the original long-stroke 74 x 90 mm to the ‘squarer’ 75.5 x 78 mm. The AMC gearbox replaced the older Burman in 1958.[1]

In 1951 AJS development engineer Ike Hatch developed a 75.5 mm bore x 78 mm stroke, three valve head version of the 7R making 36 bhp (27 kW). It was called the AJS 7R3, and was Ike's response to the Italian multi-cylinder racers. They did well enough in their first year, not as well the second. For 1954 Jack Williams, the works team manager, developed the bike further, lowering the engine in the frame, and making some tuning changes that gave 40 bhp (30 kW) @ 7800 rpm. It immediately won the first two rounds of the World Championship and took first at the Isle of Man TT. These were factory specials, but one has survived, and a second has been reconstructed from spares.[

Racing
AJS 7Rs won the 1961, 62 and 63 Junior Manx TT races and came second in 1966. The 1957 AJS 7R 350 cc, with 75.5 mm bore and 78 mm stroke, gave 38.5 bhp (28.7 kW) at 7600-7800 rpm, and weighed 285 lb (129 kg). The top speed was 180-190 km/h (115-120 mph).[3]

AMC withdrew from the world of works, and one-off, road racing at the end of the 1954, with the death of Ike Hatch, and in the face of fierce competition from the other European bikes.

After this AJS made a production version of the standard two valve AJS 7R, for privateers and a 500 cc version, badged as a Matchless G50 was also sold. By the end of production in 1963 the two valve OHC AJS 7R engine made over 40 bhp (30 kW

Taormina - The Sicilian cart

Taormina - The Sicilian cart

The Sicilian cart (or carretto Siciliano in Italian and carrettu Sicilianu in Sicilian or carretti (plural)) is an ornate, colorful style of horse or donkey-drawn cart native to the island of Sicily, in Italy. The carts were introduced to the island by the ancient Greeks. Carts reached the height of their popularity in the 1920s, when many thousand were on the island. Miniature carts, or Carrettino Siciliano, are often sold in Sicily (or in Italian shops and restaurants in other countries) as souvenirs. The Museo del Carretto Siciliano, in Terrasini, in the province of Palermo, is a museum dedicated to the carts.
Sicilian wood carver, George Petralia states, that horses were mostly used in the city and flat plains, while donkeys or mules were more often used in rough terrain for hauling heavy loads. The cart has two wheels and is primarily handmade out of wood with iron metal components. Carts are used for hauling miscellaneous light loads, such as produce, wood, wine, and people, called "Carretto del Lavoro" (cart for work) and also carts for festive occasions such as weddings and parades called "Carretto de Gara'. The Carretto is like the 'taxi' or 'truck' of today.
The Sicilian Carretto is made in several provinces in Sicily each with their own style. Carretti made in the province of Palermo have more of a square box design, those made in Catania are made with more elaborate 'keys', and then there are the carts made in Agrigento which have their own distinctive style. The craft of making the carts is handed down from generation to generation, through the training of apprentices. Carts are known for being covered in carvings and brightly painted scenes from Sicilian history and folklore as well as intricate geometrical designs. These scenes also served the purpose of conveying historical information to those who were illiterate. The colors of Palermo's flag, yellow and red, feature prominently on the carts, along with details in bright blues and greens. The animals pulling the carts are often elaborately adorned as well.

If you're gonna be miserable, do it with friends!

The idea is that you don't make them miserable as well - you CHEER UP!

I thought it was only fitting to leave Rome where I started - right back at the beginning of this set with the lonely wretched horse in St Peter's Square.

Here's the truth of it - he wasn't really alone - I just framed it that way. Yes it's wet and a wee bit chilly, but those carriage drivers were always checking the covers & blankets were doing their job, along with a firm scratch of muzzle and what sounded like soothing words. Sometime soon, the sun along with the tourist hoardes, will come out - for about nine months! Then these horses will be grateful for a rest and cool temperatures, grass is always greener eh? (Not that you'd find any in St Peter's Square!)

Until next time then, that's the end of the Rome Set - not bad output for two days in the winter. Thanks for making it so much fun.

Ciao!

the measurement might not be clear, but there is a bout a 15mm difference between the wheel to strut measurement from one side to the other. the wheel spins true, but it's at an angle. there's some wear on the tire tread from where the previous owner rode this way. i'm assuming the swing arm is bent. i'm considering making new struts that are adustable.

wrong linkages

wrong linkages

this was my first effort at the steering linkage,,there was a slight binding I learned when I brought the truck in for wheel alignment so all linkage removed and installed 3 "sweet " joints that could handle the angles. I tried to save $$ but in the end Sweet joints was my only alternative.

Audi RSquire 6

Audi RSquire 6

It's kind of a representation of how far the wagon has come since the 70's as well as a positive nod to the old luxo-barges. Wagons: cool in their own right.

The name? Taken from Ford Country Squire, the RSquire 6 also cleverly includes the phonetic sounding of 'esquire', which is a title of respect the RS6 commands. Add the woodgrain, low-profile tires that are on rims that make it appear like whitewalls, and a roof rack with some rockin' awesome plaid luggage, and you get a lowered RS6 with some style. Retro? Classy.

And as you can see, grammar is not my strong point. It should read "If you're pulled over", not "If your pulled over".

Where Have They Been? - Explore

Every time I come across old wagon wheels like these, I always wonder where they have been, what they were used for, and how long have they been idle. In this case it looks as if the rims have outlasted the wooden wheels and spokes. One thing we know for sure - history was made on these wheels. Explored 8-5-2011
